Genesis 2:21-24 (NIV)

“So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man.” This Is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.”

Devoción

As we put Jesus first and our husband or wife second in our lives, we open the door for the blood of Jesus to heal our relationship and restore the oneness that husband and wife were created to have. Of course, any claims to Jesus first and spouse second are hollow platitudes if we are still worshiping porn, greed, career, self, or other idols. But as we cry out and Jesus brings freedom from those idols, Jesus can return our marriage relationship to the oneness of his original design.

Regardless of where you and your spouse are on your path, you can still approach the throne of grace together in prayer. As sin and death try to pull you apart, you can trust that Jesus wants to redeem your husband and wife and make you one. Together, you can ask God to help you make Jesus first and the other second as you ask to be transformed to carry out his will, together.

Married (to be prayed together):
Querido Padre Celestial,
We thank You for the gift of each other and the gift of marriage. We thank You for the blood of Jesus that can heal our relationship. We confess that we have not always put Jesus first and our spouse second. Forgive us we pray, and as we look forward, help us to do Your will by the power of Your Holy Spirit. In the Name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Single:
Querido Padre Celestial,
I thank You for the gift of marriage. I confess that I have not always put You first, and that has negatively impacted my relationships. Help me to desire to become a good partner more than to find a good partner in all my future relationships, including marriage, should that be your will. Help me to better honor the gift of marriage through encouragement, prayer, and support of the married brothers and sisters around me. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Pastor Craig Groeschel encouraged married couples to develop this one life-changing, marriage-growing habit starting today: Pray with your spouse. Keep it short. What do you pray for? Use today’s devotional prayer, or start at one sentence if you need to: “Jesus, we seek you today. We want to honor you. In Jesus’ Name, amen.” The goal is not how long you pray, but that you pray.
