Treasures Old and New

Matthew 13:51-52 (ESV)
“Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

In Matthew 13:51-52, Jesus acknowledges His disciples' understanding, elevating them to true teachers within His kingdom. He compares them to a homeowner who brings out treasures both old and new from their storeroom, signifying the disciples' role in sharing the timeless truths of the Old Testament alongside Jesus' new teachings about the kingdom of heaven. The old teachings are foundational, pointing to Jesus as the Messiah, while the new revelations enrich our understanding of living in God's kingdom.

If we treasure the old, out of it will spring forth the new. We should value tradition but also embrace the revelation Christ offers.

For us today, this means:

  • Valuing Tradition: We should not discard the old teachings but see them as foundational. They give us the context and history from which new insights can grow.
  • Embracing Revelation: The new teachings of Jesus offer fresh perspectives and applications for our lives. They show us how to live in light of the kingdom now and prepare for the kingdom to come.
  • Being Teachers: As followers of Christ, we are all called to be like the homeowner, bringing out treasures for others. We share the timeless truths of scripture alongside the dynamic, living insights of Christ's teachings.
If you find yourself clinging only to the old, ask yourself if you're open to the new revelations that God might be showing through Jesus. And if you're only interested in the new, remember that the old provides the base upon which the new can stand.

Oración de hoy

Querido Padre Celestial,
Lord, help me to treasure both the old teachings of Your Word as foundational truths and the new revelations through Jesus as fresh insights for my life. Grant me the wisdom to share these treasures, old and new, so that I may teach and live out Your kingdom's values in both continuity and renewal.
