Treasures In Heaven

Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV)
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Have you ever noticed that often when we obtain treasures on the earth, they quickly consume our thoughts, our conversations, our money, and our time. We tell everyone about them, while showing them pictures of the wonderful things we possess and expressing the joys they bring. We can’t wait until we can get back to them and enjoy them to the fullest. While there isn’t necessarily anything wrong with some of them, we often put so much time and attention into those things, that we lose sight of the eternal treasures that truly matter.
Imagine if we put that much time and effort into storing up treasures in Heaven. What if we were as consumed with telling others about our Lord and Savior, praying for them, and living as an example of his character? What if we invited others to enjoy our treasures with us and use them as witnessing tools for sharing our faith, answered prayers, and his ultimate joy? What if we spent time and resources helping others rather than making sure we have the latest gadget or kept up with the latest trend?
In his Sermon on the Mountain, Jesus teaches multiple ways we can store up treasures in Heaven. He starts with a list of Beatitudes and tells us to be humble and pure in heart, to hunger and thirst for righteousness, to build our house on the Rock, and to be the salt and light of the earth teaching others about him while living a godly lifestyle. He instructs us to show mercy, give to the needy, not to be judgmental, make peace with others, forgive, love, and pray for them, even those who have hurt us the most.
Jesus says in Matthew 7:24-25 that everyone who hears and does the things he has spoken, will be like a wise man and will not fall. We are wise when our primary focus is taking others to Heaven with us, because each one is a treasure of immeasurable value. Nothing the world offers can compare!
Proverbs 11:30 “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who wins souls is wise.”
Oración de hoy
Querido Padre Celestial,
I offer my gratitude to You for who You are and for the love and mercy which You show me daily. Please help me to be a consistent representative of Your Son to all those within my sphere of influence. Guide me in meeting others where they are and leading them to You in word and in deed. With each decision I face regarding storing up treasures on the earth, remind me to seek Your counsel on how I can better use my time and resources to store up treasures in Heaven. I commit to showing others the way to You, because they are the most valued treasures. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
