Luke 17:15 (NKJV)
“And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God,”
Devoción
Ten leprous men, standing at a distance, cried out to Jesus as He passed through their village, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” By calling Jesus “Master” (Epistata, Greek), they went beyond recognizing Him as a healer to acknowledging Him as “Superintendent” or “Commander,” meaning One with the divine authority to command their bodies to be cleansed. Was this an act of faith? Yes. In response to their faith, Jesus told them to go and show themselves to the priests. They were not healed instantly, but in response to their obedience to Jesus’ words, they were cleansed as they went to see the priests.
Leprosy was an incurable disease in biblical times, and those who had the disease were treated as outcasts. They were forced to proclaim aloud, “Unclean, unclean!” wherever they went so everyone would know they were diseased. They also lived outside the camp. So, when Jesus cleansed them, He not only restored the individuals’ health but also their social and spiritual status as they went to show themselves to the priests. It was healing on all levels—spirit, soul, and body. That’s so like Jesus.
Yet, of the ten, there was one who stood out, and he is still being remembered to this day.
This man was a foreigner. He was from Samaria, an area disliked by the Jews at the time. But he is remembered because his faith had follow-through. It was accompanied by praise and gratitude. The Bible says, “He returned and with a loud voice glorified God.” Jesus, acknowledging his faith, told him, “Arise, and go your way; your faith has made you well.”
[If we are the ones who remember Him, we will be the ones He remembers.]
Praise and worship acknowledge who is on the throne of our hearts. Whether in the valley or on the mountaintop, our love and devotion remain steadfast in Christ alone.
Hosea 14:8 (NLT) exhorts us: “O Israel, stay away from idols! I am the One who answers your prayers and cares for you. I am like a tree that is always green; all your fruit comes from Me.”
Praise and worship keep our eyes set on the One who alone is worthy.
