The Heart Of Forgiveness

Matthew 19:7-8 (NIV)

“Why then," they asked, "did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?" Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.”

Devoción

In this passage, the Pharisees questioned Jesus about the legality of divorce, citing Moses' commandment regarding it. However, Jesus redirected their focus from legality to the condition of the heart.

Jesus acknowledged that divorce was permitted under the law of Moses, but he pointed out that it was due to the hardness of their hearts, not because it was the ideal or intended design from the beginning. He emphasized that God's original plan for marriage was unity, intimacy, and lifelong commitment.

As we reflect on this passage, it prompts us to examine our hearts. How often do we allow hardness of heart to dictate our actions and decisions, especially in our relationships? Whether it's in marriage, friendships, or family dynamics, our hearts can become hardened by pride, selfishness, and unforgiveness.

But Jesus calls us to a higher standard. He invites us to cultivate hearts of forgiveness, compassion, and grace. Instead of holding onto grudges and grievances, we are called to extend forgiveness just as God has forgiven us.

Forgiveness doesn't mean condoning wrongdoing or forgetting past hurts. Rather, it's a conscious choice to release the grip of bitterness and resentment from our hearts. It's a decision to let go of the desire for revenge and to embrace reconciliation and healing.
Jesus' words challenge us to reconsider our approach to relationships. Are we quick to give up when faced with difficulties, or are we committed to working through challenges with humility and love? Are we willing to extend grace and forgiveness even when it's undeserved?

Today, let's pray for soft hearts that are receptive to God's will. Let's ask for the strength to forgive others as we have been forgiven. And let's strive to reflect God's love and grace in all our relationships, trusting that his design for unity and reconciliation is truly the path to fulfillment and wholeness.

Querido Padre Celestial,
I stand in awe that You, in Your sovereignty, are so quick to forgive me when I have made bad choices. Thank You for Your loving example as to how I should respond to others when they have wronged me. Forgive me for dwelling on the wrong and allowing the unforgiveness and bitterness to stir within my heart. Your Word is clear that to be forgiven, I must forgive others. Help me, Lord, to pray for those who come against me. Stir a love within my heart for them that is so strong, that it causes me to care more about seeing them make it right with You, than I do about the hurt they caused me. Help me to grow as I walk in forgiveness. Thank You, Father. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Look up Scriptures on forgiveness and jot them down. Begin to memorize them one by one. When faced with a choice to hold on to hurt, bitterness, or anger against someone, recite these verses and choose forgiveness. You may have to do this every day for a season, but keep doing so until your spirit changes and your reservoir (memory bank) is full of God’s word.
