The Devil’s Sugarcoated Trap

Proverbs 7:19-23 (NKJV)
“For my husband is not at home; He has gone on a long journey; He has taken a bag of money with him, And will come home on the appointed day.” With her enticing speech she caused him to yield, With her flattering lips she seduced him. Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, Or as a fool to the correction of the stocks, Till an arrow struck his liver. As a bird hastens to the snare, He did not know it would cost his life.”

When Adam and Eve fell in the Garden of Eden, God was not caught by surprise. The plan for our redemption had already been prepared. From the beginning, the Father had determined that His Son, Jesus Christ, would come so that we could inherit the Kingdom of God. The devil has never stopped working to keep people from that Kingdom. Contrary to the frightening images often painted of him, Satan does not always appear as a dark, hideous creature with claws, horns, or a tail. In fact, Scripture tells us he was beautifully adorned when he was in heaven. Even now, he often comes in ways that look attractive, charming, and pleasant. He knows how to make sin look sweet, harmless, and even “right” in the moment.
This is the trap Proverbs 7 warns us about. Sin can feel exciting and harmless at first, but its end is destruction. The enemy’s mission has not changed: to steal, kill, and destroy. He does not mind how pleasant the path looks, so long as it leads to death. Like the young man in Proverbs, many walk into danger without realizing they are on their way to ruin. That is why we must keep our hearts anchored in God’s Word and our eyes fixed on Jesus. No matter how tempting sin appears, we must remember its cost is far greater than it first seems. The sweetness fades quickly, but the consequences can be eternal.
God calls us to live with wisdom and discernment. What may look like pleasure for a moment can rob us of our future with Him. As we wait for the promise of heaven, we must guard our hearts, flee from sin, and stay close to the Shepherd who laid down his life for us.

Querido Padre Celestial,
Thank You for opening my eyes to the truth. Help me to recognize and resist every trap the enemy sets before me. Give me wisdom to see beyond appearances and strength to walk in Your ways. Keep my heart pure, my thoughts fixed on You, and my life anchored in Your truth. I choose the path that leads to life. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
