Put God First

Sunday, November 10

2 Kings 22:15-20 (NIV)
“She said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Tell the man who sent you to me, This is what the LORD says: I am going to bring disaster on this place and its people, according to everything written in the book the king of Judah has read. Because they have forsaken me and burned incense to other gods and aroused my anger by all the idols their hands have made, my anger will burn against this place and will not be quenched.’ Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, ‘This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says concerning the words you heard: Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before the LORD when you heard what I have spoken against this place and its people—that they would become a curse and be laid waste—and because you tore your robes and wept in my presence, I also have heard you, declares the LORD. Therefore I will gather you to your ancestors, and you will be buried in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster I am going to bring on this place.’” So they took her answer back to the king.”

In today’s theme scripture, we encounter a remarkable moment in the reign of King Josiah. At a young age, Josiah became king over Judah, inheriting a nation that had strayed far from God. But despite the surrounding idolatry and corruption, Josiah’s heart was set on seeking the Lord. When the Book of the Law was found, he was deeply moved by its words and humbled himself, seeking God’s guidance through the prophetess Huldah. Because Josiah put God first, the Lord honored his humility and devotion, blessing his reign with peace.

In verses 19-20, God spoke through Huldah, affirming that Josiah’s tender heart and repentance brought God’s mercy upon him and his people. God delayed the judgment over Judah, sparing Josiah from witnessing the coming calamities. By prioritizing God’s word, Josiah brought spiritual renewal to his people, reminding us that when we put God first, He can guide and bless our lives in powerful ways.

This story challenges us to consider the posture of our own hearts. Like Josiah, do we approach God’s word with humility and openness? Are we seeking His will above all else, even when our surroundings pull us in different directions? When we choose to put God first—seeking His wisdom, surrendering our plans, and aligning our lives with His word—He promises to lead us into His purpose. And like Josiah, we find peace and assurance, knowing that God honors those who honor Him.

Oración de hoy

Querido Padre Celestial,
Reading the words above challenging me to consider the posture of my heart, I pause to reflect and consider how You see the posture of my heart. Help me to read and study Your Word with humility and openness to allow it to change me in any way You desire. Help me to put You first, to seek Your wisdom, guidance, and purpose for my life. Help me, Lord, to become truly committed to You more than I have ever been. As for me and my house, we will serve You fully. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Just as God brought mercy upon the people over whom Josiah ruled because of his repentant and tender heart toward Him, God will show mercy over your family and those over whom you have spiritual authority. Even though life won’t always be easy, He will be in the midst of those you love through every aspect of life. Be determined to consecrate yourself unto Him for your sake and for the sake of those you love and hold dear.
