2 Chronicles 14:9 (ERV)
“Then Zerah from Ethiopia came out against Asa’s army. He had 1,000,000 men and 300 chariots in his army. His army went as far as the town of Mareshah [in Judah].”

King Asa of Judah acknowledged God, obeyed Him, and got rid of the idols in the land. There was spiritual and physical peace for a time. King Asa used that time to build and fortify the cities of Judah, and they prospered (verses 7-8). Today’s verse describes an intimidating enemy who rose against them.

Jesus, the Messiah, opened the way for us to be reconciled to God – to be counted among His people. Jesus taught his followers to seek God and his righteousness first, promising the rest will be added – clothes, food, and shelter (Matthew 6:33). In times of rest and peace, strengthen yourself in the Word of God, fortify yourself with the armor of God (Ephesians 6). Then when a challenge suddenly appears, you will be prepared.

Note that King Asa did not rely on the strength of his army. Rather, he cried out, “O YHWH, there is none like you to help… Help us, YHWH our God, for we rely on you.” Asa’s army did pursue the enemy, but it was YHWH who brought the victory. As King David wrote, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the Name of YHWH our God.” (Psalm 20:7).

This principle is confirmed by multiple passages in Scripture: prepare yourself, but submit your plans and needs to the Lord (Proverbs 16:3). Not only did God bring victory for King Asa, but he used the enemy to bless the people after the battle.
All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Jesus (Matthew 28:18). His power is available to those who bear his name and seek him first. Strengthen yourself, but, like King Asa and King David, do not rely on your strength. Cry out to Jesus, appeal to God’s character and promises in Scripture, and trust Him for victory.

Querido Padre Celestial,
Many times my own heart and strength fail. I acknowledge that You are the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Let Your Word have its effect on my life to make me holy, to strengthen my character and my spirit. Help me to wisely use the time You have given me to strengthen myself and others in their relationships with You. When physical and spiritual challenges come, may my first thought be of You. Oh Lord, save! And give us a spiritual harvest of people away from the evil one who has deceived and captured them. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

The song, “We Trust in the Name of the Lord our God,” by Steve Green, observes that some trust in physical defenses, physical strength, and/or money. The song reminds us that God’s name is the strongest defense; it is by God’s grace that work gets done, and He is worth more than anything. Listen to this or a similar song today, and let it refresh your perspective.
