Genesis 32:27-28
So He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob.” And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
Devoción
Jacob, the deceiver, wanted God’s blessing upon him so desperately that he fought with God all night, even through the pain of a dislocated hip joint. When many of us would have given up, Jacob persisted.
Because of his willingness to persevere and let that fight define a new identity in him, God blessed him beyond that for which he was fighting. He not only kept him safe from his brother Esau, but He restored that relationship. He changed his name to Israel, meaning, one who prevails with God.
You see, he did not let the all-night encounter defeat him, rather, he allowed it to change him, body, mind, soul, and spirit.
