“Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?”

Devoción

In the heart of Matthew 19:3, Jesus emphasizes that marriage, from its inception, was designed by God to be a permanent and complementary union between a man and a woman. In doing so, Jesus drew on the timeless truths of Genesis to reveal the covenantal nature of this union.

When God created man and woman, He did so with the intention of making His image visible on earth. Marriage, therefore, is not just a union of two individuals but a reflection of God's unity, diversity, and community. It is in the coming together of husband and wife that we find the most vivid earthly representation of the triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—unified in purpose yet distinct in personhood.

Furthermore, marriage is a portrayal of Christ's relationship with the Church. Husbands and wives are called to love and respect each other in a manner that mirrors Christ's sacrificial love for the Church and the Church's reverence for Christ. This relationship is not just for the benefit of the couple but serves as a testimony to the world of how Christ loves His bride, the Church, with a love that is unconditional, self-sacrificial, and eternal.

As followers of Christ, we are called to uphold the sanctity of marriage, recognizing it as a divine institution meant to reflect God's love, faithfulness, and covenantal relationship with us. Simply put, marriage is of paramount importance to God because it serves as a testament to the world of God's unending faithfulness. Let us strive to embody these truths in our marriages, serving as beacons of light in a world in desperate need of witnessing the beauty of God's design for marriage.

Querido Padre Celestial,
In the quiet moments of my heart, I come before You with reverence and gratitude. As I reflect on the words of Matthew 19:3, I am reminded that marriage is not merely a human construct but a heavenly design, a beautiful tapestry woven by Your loving hands. Teach me, O Lord, to see marriage as more than just a partnership, but as a sacred covenant, a reflection of Christ's relationship with His Church. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
