Making Covenant With God
Tuesday, February 4
Genesis 15:10 (NKJV)
“Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, down the middle, and placed each piece opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds in two.”
Devoción
Today’s verse refers to the covenant God was about to make with Abraham – the promise of an heir and descendants that would be as numerous as the stars in heaven. Abraham believed God at His word and his faith was accounted to him for righteousness.
Because of Abraham’s faith, God set out to make a covenant with him, one that could not be broken, being enforced by His own words. Abraham prepared the sacrifices and placed the pieces on the left and right as God instructed, then fell into a deep sleep. God appeared as a smoking oven and a burning torch that passed down the middle between the pieces. Then the Lord made a covenant with Abraham. “… because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, ‘Surely, blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.’ “(Hebrews 6:13,14) This was an infallible promise made to Abraham because God was the One who initiated the covenant and bore the burden to fulfill it.
To understand the weight of a covenant, it is a binding agreement between two parties. In biblical terms, this is a commitment of loyal love between God’s people and Himself. God being rich in mercy, pledges His strength to protect and provide. We, in turn, pledge our loyalty to love Him with all our heart, mind, soul and strength. And to love our neighbor as ourselves. (Mark 12:30) When we keep Christ elevated as the center of our lives, and use the fruit of His relationship to bless other people, we do well. When His love becomes our motivating force to bring unity and to dispel division, we do well.
May we embrace today, the weight of our covenant with Christ – His commitment and faithfulness to uphold His promises and the ripple effect that comes from putting Him first.

Querido Padre Celestial,
Thank You for being a covenant-keeping God. Your promises are sure because they rest on Your unchanging nature. Help us to honor our covenant with You, not out of obligation, but from a heart filled with love and gratitude. Strengthen us to remain loyal, to keep Christ at the center of our lives, and to reflect Your love in our relationships. May our hearts be anchored in faith, just as Abraham’s was, trusting fully in Your faithfulness. In the Name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
