Genesis 1:3 (NIV)

“And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”

Devoción

Light is an amazing thing. When you turn on a light switch, the light that shines from it takes the place of darkness! The darkness that was there is no longer present until that light is turned off. The very definition of darkness is the “absence of light.” If light is present, then there is no darkness except in any shadows that are cast from objects that block that light. In Genesis, we see that it was God who first spoke light into existence in our world. The Bible also speaks about spiritual darkness and the light of life. The world is becoming a very dark place as far as evil growing more prevalent, but we have no need to be “afraid of the dark” because we have the light of Jesus within us.

Jesus said in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” In Matthew 5:14, 16, Jesus tells His followers, “You are the light of the world…Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Jesus is our source of light, and it is Jesus within us that can shine in the darkness of the world around us. Not only is His Word “a light unto our path” (Psalm 119:105), but Jesus tells us that by following Him we will never be in darkness and that we are given the torch to carry His light to the world as well. Outside of Jesus, the world lives in darkness. It is up to us to reflect the light of the “Son,” just as the moon reflects the “sun.”

In this, the world will see the light and come to know Jesus through us. The light within us is the light of life—Jesus—and living within Him, we will act as He does; we are empowered by Him, and we love others like He does. We are not just striving to do good works, but we are living Jesus before others—we are letting our light shine! As a result, men will see our good works and glorify the Father. Let your light shine today!

Oración de hoy

Querido Padre Celestial,

I thank You that in Jesus we find life, and His life is the light of men. His life is so powerful that it dispels all the darkness around it. So help me to shine Your light on those around me. Fill me with Your Spirit. Let my life bring honor to You. Glorify Your name as I walk in Your Word. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Since God’s ways are contrary to the world’s ways, when you are filled with His Word, your light will overcome the darkness at every turn to shine the pathway Home for those who are lost.
