Honoring the Past, Building the Future

Exodus 20:12 (NIV)
“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.”
Devoción
In Pastor Franklin’s message on Sunday, he spoke about the old vs. the new. He related the “old” with treasures numerous times. In Matthew 6:21 Jesus says, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
It is interesting that the Bible has an Old Testament and a New Testament. We have the foundation of God’s principles in the Old Testament and then we have the additional foundation that God laid out for His children in the New Testament. This new generation of teachers in the New Testament relied on the Old Testament to bring forth new life in the New Testament. These powerhouses of the faith who were spreading the gospel were born from those who laid the groundwork for them in the Old Testament, just as Jesus was a descendant of King David and was introduced in the New Testament, bringing God’s Word!
In today’s passage we are called to “honor our father and our mother”. For many, this is a very difficult passage to understand. Why would anyone want to forgive parents who neglected, abused, or harmed them? Why is anyone called to forgive parents like that? Jesus, faced with a dilemma, questioned his perfect Heavenly Father by pleading with Him in Luke 22:42-44, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will but your will be done.” He honored God by doing what God called him to do and not what his flesh wanted to do. This laid the foundation for all to come to repentance and have eternal life.
We must do what God has called us to do, to honor the former generations, so we can step into the abundant blessings waiting ahead for us and for generations to come.
Let’s give God praise today for the generations who came before us and for the ones to come! That the generations to come will be better versions of the one that is.
Oración de hoy
Querido Padre Celestial,
Thank You for the spiritual mother’s and father’s whom You have placed in my life over the years. Please bring to my remembrance the lessons they taught me along the way, that I may grow closer to You than I have ever been. I ask that You use me to be a spiritual leader to those in my life, so that they too, can walk closer to You. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
