Have You Surrendered All For This Promise?

Sunday, November 3

Romans 8:35-39 (NIV)
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Devoción

Do you find yourself shrinking back from the idea of hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, or sword? It may be that, while you hope and long for the promises of Romans 8 quoted above, you still have some dying to self to do according to Romans 6. “For if we have been united with Jesus in a death like his, then we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin - because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.” (Romans 6:5-7)

We do not become more than conquerors by claiming and repeating a promise. We become more than conquerors by dying to our sin and selves with Jesus – through trust and surrendering all. Hedging your bets, withholding something “just in case” is not surrendering all. When a promise of Scripture does not seem to be true in our lives, we do well to consider if we are really in the group to whom the promise applies. What are you holding on to that might keep this promise from applying?.

Oración de hoy

Querido Padre Celestial,
I thank You for the precious promises of Scripture and for the precious blood of Jesus that can make them all true in my life. I confess that I often do not feel like more than a conqueror. Show me, Lord God, if this is due to my failure to surrender all – to take up my cross each day and follow Jesus. Show me if I am holding something back. Show me the path to become wholehearted in my trust and surrender to Jesus. And supposing that I am really wholehearted, then help me to believe and claim and hold on tightly to this promise, when I feel it and when I don't. In the Name of Jesus, I Pray. Amen.

Paul asks in Romans 6, “How can we who died to sin still live in it?” Newness of life in Jesus comes after dying to sin. Is there an area where you know you have one foot on Jesus’ side and one foot still in sin? Why is that? Just in case God doesn’t come through? Listen to yourself say that out loud. Now, lay down your double-mindedness at the foot of the cross. Freedom is a miracle and obedience prepares the way for it.
