Guard Your Heart

Friday, July 4

1 Kings 11:1-3 (NIV)
“King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. They were from nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.” Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray.”
Devoción

King Solomon started his reign with great wisdom, humility, and favor from the Lord. He asked for wisdom to lead God’s people instead of riches or power, and God gave him both wisdom and blessings in abundance. But over time, Solomon’s heart drifted from the Lord.

This passage shows us the root of his failure: “Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love.” His disobedience did not begin with one giant rebellion but with many small compromises. Despite God’s clear instructions, Solomon’s affections for what God forbade turned his heart toward idolatry.

His alliances through marriage to foreign women were politically motivated but spiritually disastrous. Instead of influencing his wives to worship the true God, they influenced him to follow after false gods.

Solomon’s downfall reminds us that even the wisest person can be led astray if they let their affections become divided. Love for things, people, or ideas that contradict God’s commands will always war against our devotion to Him.

Today's Prayer

Querido Padre Celestial,
I come before You humbly, asking for Your help to guard my heart. Reveal to me anything or anyone that has the power to lead me away from You. Give me strength to let go of every compromise, and help me to hold fast to You alone. May my love for You grow deeper every day. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Be intentional about guarding your heart. Ask yourself: What relationships, habits, or desires am I holding fast to that could turn my heart away from God? You may not have 700 wives, but we all have distractions that compete for our affection and obedience. True faithfulness means daily choosing to love what God loves and hate what He hates.
