Are You Lukewarm And Double-Minded?
Sunday, November 8
Revelation 3:15-16 (NIV)
“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”
Devoción
Jesus determines our spiritual temperature—hot, cold, or lukewarm—not by looking at our feelings, intentions, or our heart. Jesus sees us as lukewarm by knowing our deeds. We would do well to judge our spiritual temperature the same way, by looking at our actions. When we fail to love the Lord with “all our heart, soul, mind, and strength,” our hearts and minds are divided. In some areas, we want to please God, but in other areas of our lives and actions, we count differently. Thus, we become lukewarm and double-minded.
We cannot serve two masters. The house divided against itself will not stand. The life of the double-minded man does not stand when the storms, pressures, and temptations come. We might be tempted to recall and emphasize the times and areas of life when we are doing a good job serving Jesus and being separate from the love of the world and its sins. But since Jesus knows all our deeds, we need to take care to consider them all when assessing our spiritual temperature. A mixture makes us lukewarm.
Once we gain the victory and sins are truly renounced and put in our past, they are no longer among the deeds Jesus considers regarding our spiritual temperature. But if a specific sin or family of sins is recurring in our lives, we deceive ourselves into thinking we are walking in victory. We then need to heed the advice of James:
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” (James 4:7–10)
Oración de hoy
Querido Padre Celestial,
Forgive me for the times I have allowed my heart to become divided between You and the things of this world. Search my heart and reveal anything that is keeping me from wholehearted devotion to You. Give me the courage to turn away from sin, the strength to resist temptation, and the discipline to walk in obedience. Help me love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. May my actions reflect a genuine and undivided commitment to You. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
