A Time To Plow

Hosea 10:12 (NKJV)
“Sow for yourselves righteousness; Reap in mercy; Break up your fallow ground, For it is time to seek the LORD, Till He comes and rains righteousness on you.”

Devoción

It has been said, “the same sun that softens the earth, is the same sun that hardens it.” Breaking up fallow ground is an activity in farming that must be performed, before any seed can be planted, because the hot sun just bakes “hard” the soil. Breaking up fallow ground is also found in the teaching of the Sower found in the book of Mark chapter 4. The fallow ground being directly tied to the “conditions or types of hearts” where the seed (The Word) is sown into.

The Bible instructs us that while we are fasting, not to “rend our garments, rather our hearts” (Joel 2:13), and that “what we sow, we shall reap” (Galatians 6:7-8). But yet, how often when we enter a “hard time, a hard place; a rough patch” in our walk of faith we seemingly struggle because the good seed we sowed is not producing after its own kind. We are perplexed. We sowed in righteousness, and we had reaped in mercy before; why not now? So, we turn to the Word of God, but since our hearts are not soft, the Word just does not make a dent. And the danger may be, we come away a little harder still.

If we were to examine ourselves, we would realize we just came through a long Holiday Season; Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. We allowed a whole lot of overgrowth in our hearts as a result of the time of celebration, over-indulgence and over stimulation. We have done nothing wrong. However, now it is time to get back to the matter at hand, and what matters most. “It is time to seek the Lord, till He comes and rains righteousness on you,” again. And as Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 3:1, “There is a time for every purpose under heaven.”

Oración de hoy

Querido Padre Celestial,
I praise You for Your word. I thank You for the obedience of the writers, that we may glean from it and grow to a closer relationship with You. Multiple times in Your Holy Word, we are warned not to harden our hearts. I sincerely come before You now and ask that You take the areas of my heart that I have hardened, and make them soft and pliable, so that You may work through me according to Your will. Train me in Your Word and soften my heart toward You and others, that I may reflect You. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Proverbs 4:23 says, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” That’s a strong statement concerning the condition of our hearts. Prayerfully seek God and ask Him to show you what you’ve allowed into your heart that needs to change, and ask for His wisdom and guidance as you begin a heart cleanse.
